Friday Fun Zone

Wal-Mart announced that they will soon be offering customers a new discount item: Wal-Mart's own brand of wine. "There is a market for inexpensive wine", said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing. She went on to say: "But the right name and presentation is important."

Customer surveys have been conducted to determine the most attractive name for the Wal-Mart brand.

The top 10 surveyed names in order of popularity are:
10. Chateau Traileur Parc
9. White Trashfindel
8. Big Red Gulp
7. World Championship Riesling
6. NASCARbernet
5. Chef Boyardeaux
4. Peanut Noir
3. I Can't Believe It's Not Vinegar!
2. Grape Expectations
1. Nasti Spumante

The beauty of Wal-Mart wine is that it can be served with either white meat (Possum) or red meat (Squirrel). It will also be available in convenient 6-packs (aluminum cans or plastic bottles) or in 24-can cases. It will be presented in the same coolers and next to the beverages of choice that Wal-Mart's customers are already familiar with.

This was sent to me and I loved it! Most of you know how much I HATE WAL-MART! I usually end up going there and I wanna kick myself every time....

Bout Blogging

I often have people ask me about my blogging. I thought it was time to share some of my secrets.

  1. I use Bloglines! I started Bloglines awhile back and it has made blogging so much easier and quicker! I list all the blogs I'm currently reading and they are highlighted when the blog as a new post. I don't have to open a blog page only to discover that the same post is there from last week. You can read the post on bloglines page or open up the blog page. I usually open the page - I like to read off of people's own templates. This also allows me to comment if I want to. It's free (Karene) and yall should all subscribe. I've included a bloglines button on the right side of my template so you can link it from there whenever you're ready.
  2. I don't comment all the time. That's right - I'm one of those people. I may read a blog all the time and never comment. I may read yours and never write a comment. I love yall more than my luggage but time isn't always on my side.
  3. I write first. On the days that I know I'm writing a post - I write first. If an email has to go out, I write first. If I start with my blogs, then I may not have time to write. Write first.
  4. I blog early. Now, during the summer, I usually blog about 7:00 before the kids get up. I have a cup of coffee and I get up to refill and go potty. Yes, I do come back here to read during the day and the children generally follow me (I'm the Pipe Piper, follow me.) These I try to keep to snatches. Don't ask my kids if I'm on the computer all the time - I'm sure they think I am.
  5. I consider this a hobby. I happens to be a hobby that I share with lots of people and talk about alot but a hobby none the less. It puts a different perspective on it for me - I don't know how to explain it.
  6. I edit. This is important! I always reread my posts and edit. Add here, take away there, put in the word I forgot earlier, clarify sentences and attempt to have some grammatical structure. I check the spelling with spell check and go to Dictionary.com if I need to. I have read some non-editors and it can get to be too had to understand - take too long to read. I know it takes time but I know it makes a difference.

Those are my little tips. Please feel free to comment and add your own. None of us want our hobby to over take our lives!! Or do we? (cue scary laugh)

Mama, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Tacky

Ahhh, the chicken story. I think that mama's have a responiblity to teach their children manners. Yes, even boys need to learn how to act in public. I taught one old boyfriend to cut his meat - he held the fork like he was jabbing the meat. It was sooo unattractive. I'm thinking he learned something from our time together.

So, we had the college kids over to our house on Sunday night for their weekly devo. I know a couple of the kids and it just seemed like the right thing to do. It did allow me to talk to the kids about how our house is just one more thing that God has entrusted to us. I made dessert pizza and lemonade. Very low-key.

During the serving of the homemade dessert, one guy asked for a fork. There were forks on the table (of course) but for some reason he needed one from the drawer. He proceeded to open a can of chicken and pour it into a plastic cup. This was taking place next to me so I questioned him regarding the gross chicken. He offered no apology why he would come into my home and not partake of my homemade dessert. Or that he would bring his own food. He gave no explanation of his (I guessed) health issues. Where I come from we call this no "home trainin." Apparently this is a normal occurrence for this guy - he even does this in Bible Class. That's just wrong....

A Book, A Wedding and Some Cars

Sorry I haven't written is sooo long but life is moving faster than I am! I have finished the book, Better Off Flipping the Switch on Technology. It was interesting. One of the author's main ideas is that our technology doesn't make our lives easier. We become slaves to the technology. The cost of it, the upkeep, the time it uses (as I sit at a computer and write it anyone who will read.) He also wrote about the fact that we have to run, walk, work out, to get the physical reward that plugging in takes away. It doesn't come from working outside so we have to use our "leisure" time to exercise. Some of us just get fat - he wrote about that, too. One of the most interesting observations (he thought) was the ability to think and converse while doing physical labor. He and his wife were in a small Amish community and the neighbors were share work. There were often times to think and share ideas while working on the farm.

Interesting, huh? Pretty good non-fiction read. Now on to a fiction!

*********************************
I also worked a wedding this weekend. There was plenty of bare skin but no tattoos. The weirdest thing (ok, one weird thing) were the carbon copy bridesmaids. They almost matched physically. There was one poor girl who didn't get the message about her toenails. Her's were red and everyone else's were French tip. HORROR!!! Do you think it showed in the pictures??!! Robot bridesmaids, scary.
The other particularly interesting (for my readers) was the groom's cake. It was a huge red and brown tomahawk - or so I thought. The lady putting the greenery around it told me was an axe. She says "They're lumberjacks." Oh, well that explains everything I wanted to say. The bride and groom didn't look like lumberjacks to me but what do I know. After staring at her for an entire minute she told me they went to Stephen Austin State University and that makes them lumberjacks. Finally I got it.
*******************************
Last night we went to see Cars. Yes, we're the last people you know to see the movie. We loved it. It was funny and I may finally "get" Nascar. I knew it was about waiting for a wreck but it seems there's something about the passing, too. One friend told us she was a little bored toward the end but we spent so much time going to the bathroom that it was broken up for us a little. Kenny, four times and Abbie, three - Jim counted.

Reading is Fundamental

I'm trying to work into my reading some non-fiction. I've said previously that I'm a Fiction Girl - I love to get lost in a story. This summer I'm committing to read one non-fiction for every fiction book I read.

Sooooo.......
I read The Camel Club by David Baldacci and had trouble stopping to host Bunco. It's very topical fiction with conspiracy theories and international bad guys. The bad guys were both Middle Eastern and North Korean. It was a great read and I'm trying to get Jim to read it, too.

Now I'm in Better Off: Turning the Switch on Technology by Eric Brende. I found a blog site that is only book reviews. The blog writer's favorite books are some of my favorites, too, so I thought I could trust her opinions. I'm providing a link but bear in mind - they are HER opinions. In Better Off, the author is exploring the world without technology. He and his wife have moved to a small Amish (sort of) community to see how they could make it without modern tech. Good one.

Next is a fiction - I don't know what yet but I can't wait.

I Love Being A Girl

Actual conversation:

Me: Why are your pajamas wet? Did you pee-pee on them?

4-year-old: Noooooo. They are okay (loves her new pjs)

Me: But they're wet. Are you sure you didn't pee-pee on them?

4-year-old: (coyly) I fell in.

Me: What's rule #1?

4-year-old: But somtimes Bubba forgets to put the seat down.

Me: That's why we always check first.

Daddies

I've had two great daddies in my life, Thurman and Jim. One took the time and effort to raise me. He trained me in Bible knowledge and people knowledge. He loved me even when I was unlovable - kinda like our Father. The other is taking time and effort to raise my two rug rats (as he affectionately calls them.) He's training them in ways I can't. He can talk Kenny out of a tantrum and carry Abbie on his shoulders.

They both love their wives and provide for their families. They both walk with God. Happy Father's Day, daddies!

Friday Fun Zone

My Mom (MM) sent this to me. He must be a yankee - no one would hire this guy in Birmingham. Who would want this tacky truck in their driveway?

Speaking of white trash - did anyone see Brittney
Spears on TV last night? Bless her. She's pregnant and well-endowed and choose to show everyone of us! She was even chomping on gum! She really needs to hire me to help her get a clue.

M-O-U-S-E

Ewwww! We have a mouse in our backyard. I spotted it on Tuesday night while I was eating dinner and almost came out of my chair. (Yes, it was outside.) I tried to remain calm enough to tell Jim about it but my kids immediately were looking for whatever it was. Let me interject right here that I hate mice. Some people are freaky about snakes - I can walk around them and discuss them without any hesitation. I've know people who are weird about spiders - I say let them live, they eat mosquitoes. But mice are another story.......

Last night the horrible rodent walked (it ain't running) across our patio and then sat calmly deciding where to go next! I was horrified! After church, Jim got a gun and tried to kill it (Praise God) but the children kept walking out the door. Jim gave up. Now I can't go in my backyard and I look for it every time I walk by the windows. My sweet hubby keeps telling me that it can't come in our house and I'm choosing to believe him!

I was blessed during my time at Homewood church of Christ to be around several missionaries. Homewood's policy is have their missionaries live and work there for 6 months to 1 year to get to know the members. Of course, it also allowed the members to know them! Anthony Parker was one of those missionaries and his blog tells of another. Cyndi Chowning spent many years in Africa and has died there. Please link over to read Anthony's tribute.
Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

She's A Rebel

To not long for and strive to be what Jesus calls us to be is to choose hypocrisy in the name of grace and cheapen the cost of that grace. -Phil Ware

Phil has been writing about obedience on his Heartlight and on his blog. Obedience is a hard word for me. I'm fine saying it to my children but applying to myself "feels" icky. I'm a child of the 70's. I remember Women's Lib, the fall of Saigon, and disco. That entire time was about rebellion. It was hip to be against the establishment. Establishment = uncool. These were media lessons. These were the messages that surrounded us daily. My home and church lessons were definitely about obedience and rule following. I was cool - I rebelled.

True obedience is not driven by a frantic fear of being lost, but is an obedience propelled by our love for what the Lord has done for us and rooted in our confidence in our relationship with him. - Phil Ware

I'm grown up now and know the truth about God's grace and love. I respond to that grace and love with obedience to His word. It's not about rule following to be "allowed" into heaven - it's about thankfulness. It's about bringing glory to Him though our actions. It's the same way with our kids. We all long for the day that our kids obey us because they love us. So is my knee-jerk answer to obedience my "real" belief system? Is part of being real and authentic, obedience?

Maybe I do need a Harley.

Actions Speak Louder....

Abbie sings all the time! It's so sweet to overhear her singing a praise song and when I try to join in she usually tells me "I'm singing!" As in "I don't need your help." But yesterday was an eye-opener. Here's the lyrics to her made up song:

If you wanna be like Mommy, you have to act like her,
If you wanna be like Mommy, you have to act like her,
Come on, come on, you have to act like her....

I know I have alot of influence over my children but, this is down right scary. I wanna say "Don't act like me, act like Christ!" I know better than anybody what a sinful, horrible person I am and I want my kids to be better than that! I must accept the gift that God has given me (and I asked for) and I also must accept the responsibility.

Prayers for Bill

This is a special amaryllis given to me by Margaret's dad. It was one of his dad's that Bill (Margaret's dad) had moved from place to place. He had some that he had dug out of the yard in Vermont and I was fortunate enough to get one of my own. (Margaret told me he didn't share very often.)

I'm asking prayers for Bill - he's having lots of tests run and probably even surgery later in the month. He and Jean (Margaret's mom) are staying in Birmingham and he's being treated there.

Going to the Chapel

Yet another wedding:

This one was at 11:30 so you know everybody had to be there super early. I don't even know what time the florist got there. I guess she was happy to be able to do another wedding in the afternoon - I know that the photographer shot another wedding later. They had a hairdresser there doing hair at 7:30 AM. The bride and groom saw each other in "private" before the ceremony - no pictures, nothing. They weren't in there that long so maybe it wasn't too gross. Lots of live music which means lots of microphones, a long receiving line which means lots of people complaining, and a tent outside that means someone had to wait around for the tent guys to come pick it up! One tatoo, on a bridesmaid's ankle.

It was a beautiful wedding. They were very much in love and very committed to each other. I think the vows stuck. The preacher, J Wayne Kilpatrick, said when he tied a knot it stayed tied. It's lasted 11 years so far! Happy anniversary, sweetie.

Weddings and More

Well, I saw the X-Men yesterday after I posted the blogthing. I frequently have as much trouble as Jean controlling my emotions. I haven't blown anyone up yet but ya never know..... Tammy and Rob told us to stay past the credits - too cool! I loved knowing something that not everybody knew. (That's the theory behind the DaVinci Code, too.) It was like WE were the coolest people, yeah.

Bottom line - loved the movie. I'll buy it on DVD and watch it again.

**********************************
I worked a wedding this weekend. All I can say is - it was TOO HOT! The air conditioner wasn't (isn't) working in the auditorium and everyone mentioned it to me. Mom, Dad, Grandma, Cousin Bob, one of our members that attended. I nodded and said "Yes, it's hot. I'm sorry." I was ready for it to be my last wedding. I tried to be Jean Grey and think in some cool air but it didn't work - imagine that. Then they left without cleaning. We have a policy that anyone with an outside reception must clean up before they leave for the reception. Apparently this didn't apply to these people. The janitor wasn't there yet and I was by myself. A little aggravated and scared. My sweet husband and kids came to help me. Kenny thought I'd seen the "ghost." He claims to have seen a ghost in the children's wing.
We cleaned up the baptistery wall (lots of candle wax) and the janitor was there by then to clean up the carpet. Yes, candle wax all over our new black carpet. That's my job, folks. To make sure these happy families don't ruin our facility. No, it's not holy - just all we got! I'm off for 2 weeks.
One tatoo on a pregnant lady - the top of her foot.
*********************************
Lastly (or finally,) how about some reading material for the summer? Karene wanted something and it got me thinking. I'm going to read one classic and one non-fiction this summer. Suggestions? I like fiction that doesn't make me think too much so I'm looking for a little more depth. Non-fiction is always a struggle for me, too. Come up with some ideas and I'll post my choices. Maybe you can join me?

Birthdays and Other News

Tuesday was Abbie's birthday party and fun was had by all! My sweetie was 4 years old on Wednesday! It does seem that time is going too fast. It doesn't seem that long ago she was not using real words and I was worried about her. She and I went to have pedicures on her birthday - I thought it would be a nice birthday tradition. She didn't seem too impressed. Jim told me that a tradition takes a couple of years.

I need to mention that the big girl finally gave up her paci last week. Jim had to go out of town for work and she had to give it to him or go back to bed. She gave it to him! She knew she couldn't have it back. So she gave it up. Minimal screaming and yelling.

Thursday was the last of day school for Kenny and we celebrated by swimming at a friend's pool. So the long days of summer begin...

Neither A Borrower Nor A Lender Be

FYI:
If you are at the church building "borrowing" some poster paper for your child's party, you will see the children's minister. This is the point when he/she will ask you to help with VBS and you can't say no when your hand's in the cookie jar. So to speak.

*************************
I forgot to link yall to Sarah. She has an interesting point about our Sunday Best.

My Little Town

You know I love my "shows" but I haven't been big with American Idol in a few years. I was all for Kelly, then Reuben and Clay, then I stopped. Too much time to invest into one TV show. My kids and I love to watch the beginning when all the horrible people sing (Jim is usually still working nights.) Tonight I will watch and vote for Taylor Hicks. Birmingham is bringing it! Reuben is from my side of town, Bo Bice lived in the small suburb that Jim and I lived in, and Taylor is from the place I always shopped! Ah, to be so close to celebrity. I thought this was funny in the Birmingham News.

Top Ten reasons why Taylor Hicks should win "American Idol":
1. Song choices approved by Bruce Springsteen and reps for George Harrison. How cool is that?
2. Compare their dance moves. No contest.
3. Because he'd never, ever smile nonstop while singing "I Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues."
4. If Elvis had a little brother, he'd look like Taylor.
5. "Saturday Night Live" doesn't spoof just anyone.
6. Because a soul man trumps an ice princess every time.
7. Gray is the new blond.
8. Taylor didn't wear Paula's tacky new jewelry line on camera.
9. With Soul Patrol, we're talkin'¤'bout a revolution. McPheever sounds like a sickness.
10. So Katharine's dad will really have a reason to cry.

Top 10 reasons why Katharine McPhee should win "American Idol":
1. Kat had her "moment" when she sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," and even Cowell dropped his scowl. Has Taylor had his "moment"?
2. Kat can navigate a car through the nation's busiest freeway interchange - the 101/405 in Sherman Oaks, the real "Malfunction Junction" - while talking on her cell phone, sipping a latte and doing her nails. Beat that, Taylor.
3. It's in the genes - Kat's mom is a vocal coach and dad is a TV producer.
4. More women have become "Idol" winners than men.
5. Better hair. That gray's gotta go.
6. "McPhee" sounds cooler than "Hicks."
7. Kat doesn't dance like she's being manipulated from above by strings.
8. Jerry Mathers, "The Beaver" in "Leave it to Beaver," went to Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, where Kat graduated.
9. Kat can sign autographs with both her right and left hands.
10. Kat knows how to make friends. In the final cut-down show for "Idol's" Top 24, she was so excited she kissed all three judges on the lips. Your turn, Taylor.

Last night was the finale for 24 - one of the other shows you aren't watching. It was GREAT! It makes you feel safer just knowing that Jack Bauer and Aaron (the Secret Service guy) are on the job. Wait - that's not real, you say?! Jack really isn't on a slow boat to China?! Man, I gotta get out more....

Lastly, I've been trying to post my picture on the blog and I'm not having much luck. Apparently I have the wrong kind of file? jpg? Can I switch it to whatever? Help me....

Feelings

Sunday morning was wonderful. We had Senior Sunday and there were lots of Seniors - high school Seniors. They were so handsome and good-looking but nothing compared to the 1st graders. At Southern Hills the 1st graders get a real (with words) Bible on Senior Sunday. Those kids were so sweet. So many of them are children of my friends and that made it even sweeter. One of the girls, Natalie, was so excited she couldn't stop laughing and giggling with Grace Ann. ( I used their real names cause it's sweeter.) Their grins were huge and cute! All the parents got up to take the kids pictures - that was priceless, too. A huge crowd pushing each other to get the best shot.

There were two baptisms, too. One of them was a guy baptizing his fiance - it isn't often you see someone come up out of the water and get a kiss. I'm sure it was a "holy kiss" as mentioned by Paul. The other was a young girl. Needless to say I was on emotional overload. I cried during the whole thing while both of my kids told me not to cry. One of the older ladies told me that she was a crier, too, but she takes 1 to 2 Aleve to even out her emotions. I kinda want to feel my emotions. Sometimes they're a little out of control but I want to be honest about them. You know?

Easy Rider

There's a Harley Davidson motorcycle rally here this weekend. They're meeting over at the Expo Center which is just across the road from us. Jim and I saw lots of "bikes" when we went out last night. Harleys are just the coolest. All that chrome and leather with studs - LOVE IT! (I hear a Harley rumble now.) Styx is gonna be in concert for the rally tonight, too. (Come Sail Away) I realize I married a man who would rather have a horse, but I still think they are the coolest.

Sayid on a Harley - that's COOL!

LOST

I remember my Grandma watching her "stories" everyday. In 2006, we have LOTS of channels so we don't have to watch "stories" but I still enjoy my "shows." Now I don't have TiVo (or and iPod or a cell phone, either) but, I need to see Lost on Wednesday nights. So I rely on the old-fashioned VCR. It failed me last night!!!! AGAIN! What was I to do? I know so of you are already planning to stay home next week so you won't miss a minute.

I downloaded it. This was so great! Why haven't I done this before??!! I used ABC's free (limited interruption) download. You can watch it anytime. I could have paid $1.99 but I have to save for my cruise. I felt so hip. I know it's more hip to download to your iPod and watch it on your commute but I don't have either one.

Sooooo...... Who are these others??!! Bad guys, obviously, but who do they work for? Are they there just to observe? Aren't you proud of Charlie?! I love that guy. And, you know, if I'm ever crashed on a island, I want Sayid with me. That guy is so cool. I can't wait until next week (imagine that as a whine.)

Stay tuned for more shows that you aren't watching but should be....

For I Come From Alabama With My Pantyhose...

Yesterday I was trying to find a video for Abbie, The Big Comfy Couch, and came across Kenny's baby dedication. It was at Homewood CofC and it wasn't called a dedication but "New Life Celebration." The thing that struck me so visually was the suits. All the men had on suits. The preacher had a beautiful, expensive suit. All the daddies had on suits, all the men helping in the service had on suits, all the grandpas had on suits. The suits were everywhere! This was in 1998 - only 9 years ago. I will say that all the mommies had on dresses and fancy shoes, too.

How times have changed. We've had guest speakers the last 2 Sundays and they both had on suits - it was weird to see. Steve just posted about our clothing choices for Sunday mornings and I was just thinking. When I moved here, Sarah and I where the only women we knew wearing pantyhose. I only wear them now to be warm. They aren't needed any other time. I wear pants on Sunday morning - I know but it's a big deal for me.

I cringe inside when I see the boys Kenny's age wearing untucked shirts, shorts, or sneakers on Sunday morn. I want at least jeans that are tucked in! I notice women and girls in jeans and flip-flops. I don't judge one way or the other but I see it. I LOVED WATS Day when I wore my jeans and work shoes on Sunday morning.

I have no answers. I struggle every Sunday with all the clothes around me (including my own.)
What about you? What about your church and your family? Are we all still ironing on Sundays?

Laugh And The World Laughs With You

These funny stories must be told:

Our preschool director is Mrs. Becky. Mrs. Becky is wonderful! She loves the kids and she loves the teachers. She genuinely desires the best in ALL of us. She used all the money she made at her position (and more I'm sure) on all of us. I have never worked for a better boss - and we know I've had quite a few. She probably weighs 115 soaking wet.

On the last day of school (Thursday) in Abbie's class, they had a SpongeBob Squarepants pinata. I can truthfully say that I would LOVE to smack SpongeBob. That show gets on my nerves so badly! Did you know they have only made about 90 episodes!? How many times can my children watch the same thing!? I digress. All the kids in the 3s class had taken turns hitting it and it still wasn't busted. Abbie told me that Mrs. Becky came in and "whacked the heck out of it with a chair." I don't know where she got such colorful language but the image of Becky "whacking" that pinata with a chair makes me laugh.

**********************************

Again on the last day of school.... At about 8:00 at night, Abbie says to me "Mommy you forgot to put on my panties this morning." This was told in laughing voice like it was too funny! I said "You didn't have any panties on today???!!!" and then I checked. Nope, no panties. She told me that I had forgotten to put them on her that her morning. To set the record straight - SHE took them off when she used the bathroom that morning and didn't put them back on.

Jim said "Tell me she has on shorts under that." It was a skort. Criss-Cross Applesauce everybody!

Attention, Big Doings (Or Donuts)

I just had to post this ASAP! Kenny has recieved donuts!! Yes, Judy was kind enough to bring him his own that he shared with all of us! (Be forwarned that pajamas shoudn't be worn late on Saturday morning!)

School's Out For Summer

Yeah! My preschool is done until September!! I really enjoyed teaching this year but I was ready to get out!! The kids are so sweet and hearing them sing "The B-I-B-L-E" can make my day. But it was time. You wouldn't think 2 year olds would get Spring Fever but they do.

Things I Won't Miss:

  • some of the food brought from home. One child would bring cold peas and carrots, tater tots, and over ripe cantelope. If you're thinking that sounds healthy, it was yucky to watch be eaten with fingers.
  • temper tantrums One child figured out that he/she was two and that meant "Terrible Twos!" He/She has been living it out for about 2 months.
  • diaper changes Enough said.
  • snotty noses We wiped noses all day every day!
  • getting kids to sleep It required patting the child's back until he/she would go to sleep - it drove me crazy!

Things I Will Miss

  • watching the kids grow and change
  • singing in Bible class Some of my kids were unchurched so it was even sweeter. Pat, pat pat the Bible....
  • Abbie playing all day with other kids She is already wanting them all to come over.
  • the other teachers I was blessed to be around some great women that made me laugh daily!
  • nap time Once they got to sleep, they looked so cute. I took pictures of them to put in their memory books.

Now it really is time to go to the pool! School's out and it's getting hot! I'm looking forward to next year (I already know some of my kiddos) but fun time is here!!

Cute Feet

Abbie is very proud to dress herself. She said "I wanna be like Ashley." Ashley is her 4th grade friend. Abbie always seeks out the older girls who love to mama - Ashley's one of them. She plays with Abbie all the time and I always feel safe knowing Ashley's with her! Ashley doesn't worry alot about fashion though.....

Singing in the Church

Mom did a lousy job of picture taking for Abbie's program - sorry. She's in the middle on the front row with blue jean shorts on. She's standing next to the boy who she always plays house with- he's the dad. Abbie said she was a little nervous - maybe that's why she played with her hair the entire time. The little girls are two of Abbie's friends.

Thanks from Kenny for the sympathy (no he didn't write it!) but the donuts haven't come yet...

From Kenny

Finally, I'm on the computer! I was able to find my way here without any help from my mom! She's always doing something else! Don't let the smile fool you - my parents ignore and mistreat me! I'm letting the whole world know now!

They used to let me have donuts on Saturday -not now. All I ever get is Pop-Tarts. This is supposed to make me happy?! I asked if one of them would make me (and Abbie) pancakes - of course not! Abbie got to eat pancakes on her trip with Mimi and Pop. I'm sure later when I ask to go somewhere, they'll say "no" or "no today." Why not!!?? Oh, I'm not supposed to ask that. Or they'll say something about "we don't have the money today." Yada, yada, yada.

Sometimes Daddy says to Mommy "your son." What exactly does that mean, anyway? Somebody help me. Someone bring me donuts!!

Eat at Joe's

We ate at Sharkey's Burrito Company last night and I'm giving yall the restaurant review. The burritos are big and bigger - that's how they are ordered. I got a "big." The "big" are very large - plenty large enough for me and Jim. Kenny had a child's size and he thought it was big enough. This is an issue considering how much he can eat! One of the things I like here is that I can make healthier choices ( without having to order turkey.) You may choose a wheat tortilla, black beans (over refried) and lots of grilled onions and peppers. They have chicken, ground beef, fajita meat, barbarso (something about cheek meat) and veggie choices. Lots of toppings - although the nacho cheese and guacamole are extra. The burritos are about $5.00 depending on your meat choice.

It's located in the United on Judge Ely which is kinda weird but Abilene has it's share of weirdness. It feels uninviting but I learned in college that is a ploy to get you to eat and get out! They can serve more people if you move along.
I like it - it seems like the kind of place I will carry-out when Jim is working nights.

*************************
I did finish my book night before last - 980 pages worth. Now I have to wait for the next one! I've been transported back to 1776 so I plan to read McCollough's 1776 - I'll just stay in the time period.
Lastly, for those of you keeping up, this title is a song title, too. It's from an obscure film that I own on DVD and always makes me laugh. Kudos to anyone that knows the name of the movie....

We Are the World...

We Are the Sermon... Yesterday was W.A.T.S. Day at Southern Hills and our entire family worked on 2 yards. Jim was given a work crew that consisted of our shepherding Group and we recruited a few more adults! This day is an opportunity to get out in the community and work (hopefully) like Jesus would. Something tells me that Jesus would have stepped over the trash and went right into their hearts but we had to start somewhere.

I want to tell you about our houses. The first was what most of us would consider - filthy. Both families had been sited by the city for their messy alleys and we, quite happily, cleaned up their yards, too. In Abilene, people are responsible for their alleys where the garbage trucks come down to empty the large trash cans. At the first family, there had not been much attempt to hit their garbage can. There was lots of trash (read beer bottles) and overgrown trees. There was lots of glass scattered in the yard and just junk. We cut limbs, picked up trash, raked the yard and made it look alot better. The second house wasn't as filthy but lots of tree limbs and a falling down fence. The church had trailers hauling off stuff and they came for the fence. Jim and some of the other guys loaded up their trucks and carried off the limbs and trash.

Now to the kids: they were right in there working like crazy! I was so proud of our entire group of kids. Mr. Donnie had already taught them the verse "work as working for the Lord" and I was telling the kids that we were cleaning this house like it was Jesus's house. One of them, Kenny maybe (probably) commented that Jesus sure had a dirty house!

One more thing - we were on the news. The Marcelains are friendly with one reporter and she ate with us and shot us at work. We were the lead story! Shout out to Charla and her family! We couldn't have done it without yall!

Saturday in the Park

I've been reading and I can't stop! I'm on page 605 and still have 300 or so to go before I'm done. It consumes all my free time! A Breath of Snow and Ashes - Will Claire find Jamie? Will Roger kill Stephen Bonnett? Will Bree EVER get pregnant again? Who killed Malva Christie and why was she so evil? When, oh when, will Ian ever find another true love?

We did go to the Zoo yesterday for Earth Day. The picture shows a cool feature from the Abilene Zoo - a bridge over the giraffes. You can walk over and feed the giraffes out of your hand. It seemed that everyone had some rye cracker that the zoo sells to feed the animals. It's kinda sad to me that they are treated like pets. I even saw one boy chasing one of the peacocks and I commented, out loud, that if he was bitten it would serve him right! It's hard for me to go there - there's not a lot of natural habitat. At least there's no polar bears in the West Texas heat!

Your Summer Ride is a Beetle Convertible
Fun, funky, and a little bit euro. You love your summers to be full of style and sun!

Do you remember when your car defined how cool you were? Now I drive the sensible mini-van. It has very little or no coolness whatsoever.

One Decade

I recently had a conversation regarding marriage. A friend mentioned that everyone seemed to have a bump in the road at 10 years. The word divorce was even brought up. I assured her that Jim and I hadn't meant with any huge problems and we are nearing 11 years. I talked to Jim and he felt the same way as I. This has really been on my mind. I think 15 or 16 sounds hard - I don't know why.

What about you? Have you had any years that seemed particularly bad? If you are willing to post about that, please do.

My Blessings

I often wish that my children liked each other - they seem to fight all the time! This morning we went to play at the playground and they played together. There were lots of other children there and lots to do but they ended up together, playing hide and seek. Kenny was even leading Abbie around by the hand and making something up for them to pretend. It made me cry it was so sweet.

Now they are both into Mr. Rogers - after Kenny complained about it. Mr. Rogers is just very low-key and he doesn't seem to fit into our fast-paced 21st century. I'm thinking that my 2-year-olds at school would love him!

Father, thank you for the blessing of my 2 wonderful children. Thank you for showing me a future where they love each other. Praise you for loving them more than I do.

Summer Lovin'

Second Rant!

Note to the lady in the car-pool line: I know that my 8-year-old is supposed to cross at the crosswalk!! He, on the other hand, sometimes doesn't obey the rules! Feel free to tell HIM where to cross! I'm mad enough at him for almost getting run over - I don't need you to give me a safety lesson!

These Boots Were Made For Walking

I've been angry about the price of gas for weeks now! I've wanted to write about it but it seems so useless! Today, in Abilene, it was $2.84. This skipped right by $2.80 and kept going! I don't have enough exclaimation points!! I remember last year when everyone was worried about $1.80. It was on the front page of the paper and people were jumping on bikes!!

Now I read that the president of Iran says our oil prices aren't at their "true value." How high do they have to be, Mr. President? I realize that because I'm a woman you can't converse with me so this must be a rhetorical question!! This is driving (forgive the pun) me crazy!

Are you making any changes in your driving habits? Are you staying closer to home? Have you changed your vacation plans?

A Question

So if you change your eyeshadow and no one comments on it, is it ugly? Or is it just unnecessary?

Our Gift of Life

It's the weekend to celebrate, again, Jesus's gift of life for us! Today is Good Friday - it seems to be an oxymoron. How good is it Jesus hung on the cross? How good is it that Jesus was tortured? How good is it that Mary had to watch her son be executed? It's one of those wonderful paradoxs that humans just don't get!

1Co 1:27 but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,

Now on to your gift of life.... Beautiful Margaret is a kidney transplant recipient. I knew her when she was living with an anonymous donor kidney. I saw the drugs that Margaret has to take, the scars she lives with, and the fear of infection that is part of her daily life. While Kenny was so sick (after his birth) Margaret's kidney began to fail. Her courageous brother, John, gave her one of his. She lives today because of his gift of life.

Consider today donating your organs and tissues after your death. You must make the decision and tell your closest family members your wishes. They can decide not to donate if you don't let them know you wish it. Check out the UNOS website to learn more about organ donation. I pray that they take all of me - or whatever is usable. I'll have a Perfect Body in heaven! So when yall come to see me at the Heavenly Gulf, I'll be perfection! Margaret will be with me there - in her angelic bikini!!

Well, There You Go Again!

I'm finally sitting down to write about our Tuesday afternoon....

I was on the computer (of course,) Jim was painting the foyer, and the kids were watching Disney Channel. A pretty regular afternoon with the addition of Jim. Suddenly there was a loud bam and Abbie started crying, screaming - like in pain. Not the whiney sound I just heard when Kenny wouldn't play her game correctly. I jumped up in time to see Jim holding her and saying that she had fallen. We went into the bathroom and looked at a 2 inch long gash over her left eye. Jim applied pressure while I came back here and published The Wedding article. I told Kenny to put on his sandals and I drove us to the doctor's office. Jim held her in his lap where she fell asleep! It was about 4:15 and I wasn't about to pay though the wazoo for another trip to the ER.

They put us right into the Procedure Room and the nurse quickly cleaned it up. We waited about 15 minutes to see the doctor and I left. Kenny and I went into the waiting room so I wouldn't see the needles or hear the screaming. We were done by 5:20. She had 8 stitches put in. I haven't seen them yet. I have the whillies just thinking about it. I waited all night for her to start hurting and crying but she never did. Today she's been fine.

We don't know what happened. She can't seem to remember. I think she dozed off fell into the entertainment center.

Okay, I couldn't resist this:

You Are a Frappacino
At your best, you are: fun loving, sweet, and modern
At your worst, you are: childish and over indulgent
You drink coffee when: you're craving something sweet
Your caffeine addiction level: low
What Kind of Coffee Are You?

The Wedding

I've been thinking about the wedding.... I know some of you want the REAL story of Margaret & Rusty's wedding. I can't be too mean because these are people I love. Margaret and I have been friends since 1990 and Abbie is named after her (Abigail Margaret.) Rusty's new to us but he made my children laugh so he can't be all bad. So with that in mind....

The pastor (Methodist church) was super young. He must have just gotten out of seminary! There were lots of prayers- not that there's anything wrong with that! But he seemed to pray every 2 minutes. There was a cool blessing by the pastor at the end. I liked that. I kept Kenny entertained by trying to figure out the stained glass windows. Ours had a large bush and I couldn't figure out the story. Any guesses? It turned out they were labeled and all parables. What was it?

There was great food. My son pouted when I made made him walk in line at the buffet. He only wanted the shrimp. They were grilled and on skewers with bell peppers and sausages. Kenny ate about 10 but only the shrimp. He left everything else on the plate. I offered every other food but that was all he was interested in. Okay, maybe the chocolate fountain. The DJ started the dancing with "Sweet Home Alabama." You can't go wrong with that!! Abbie was out on the dance floor going to town!! She was hilarious.
All the grown moms were out there shaking their groove thing! It was happening.

It My Birthday Too Now!

It's my birthday weekend. I'm sorry if you only get one day but I have determined that this ole gal needs a weekend! I try to tell myself that age is only a state of mind but I'm confronted with it all the time!! One of the girls at my preschool had her birthday on Thursday so we both had a cake. I was trying to figure out her candles - there were either too many (more than 3, for 30) or too few (less than 30.) Oh, it was the right number - only it was 25!!!! 25!

I tryed to remember 25. I got myself in the right town (Forrest City, Ark,) right job (speech therapist for the Brinkly Schools,) and right apt (the only non-goverment apt in Forrest City.) I can only name one of my friends (Bobbie Harrison - Harding bud) everyone else's name has gone. I remember that I wanted my life to start. I was too dumb to realize it had. My main regret from that time is that I didn't embrace God and His dream for me. I was so busy trying to live for myself and my dreams. I sometimes wonder what I missed.

One more thing..... I got this video off of Supermom's blog and have fallen in love with the song and the video. In my eldery state, I don't listen to Top 40 so I never would have found this. Abbie commented that Kelly Clarkson was showing her belly button. Yeah, that what rock stars do. It's the people that make me smile. I would LOVE to get out of the car to dance!

Are you wondering? 44

Reflections on Wednesday Night

1. Stand up whenever the song "Blessed Be the Name" is sung. Some of us may want to dance!

2. Baptisms are always cool. Adults and children - always cool. Justin's (the guy who got baptised) friend was cool, too. He was so happy and excited. The angels were rejoicing.

3. Kleenex should easily obtained. It's so frequently needed.

4. Pitchpipes are a necessity.

5. It's okay to drop "Fountain Free." We have hastened.

Funny moment: I see a guy who's totally in the Spirit.... He's very tall and looking up - really into it. I'm thinking "that's great and way to go" when he yawned. You just never know someone else's heart.

Celebrate Good Times, Cmon!

Here's the family with our old friends Randy Johnson and Jimmy Gann. I couldn't bring myself to make Jim wear a jacket so a tie would have to do. Jim is looking pretty dressed up for West Texas.
Jimmy and I have been friends loooong before Jim. Jim thought I was dating Jimmy when I was talking on the phone to Jim every night!

Kenny is wearing a hand-me-down jacket from Cade Allen and I think he looks great! Abbie is holding the basket she used to pass out favors and the "bracelet" that Aunt Margaret got for her. Kenny's first boutoniere, too.

Here's Abbie at the reception with Margaret. Abbie said that she looked like Cinderella. :-)

All the girls know that it's all about the dress.... It's a Bessie with no smocking and added embroidery. There's embroidery on the collar and down the placket between the buttons. The sleeves were omitted and the collar altered to be larger. It is orchid hankerchief linen that we wouldn't let her wear in the car (the wrinkles, of course.) Abbie thought it was so silly that she get dressed in the parking lot!

I'll post more soon!

Priceless

materials for Abbie's dress: $50.00

gas money to get to Birmingham: $150.00

seeing Aunt Margaret get married: priceless

Abilene - Prettiest Town I've Ever Seen

Hey folks! It's Monday - we're home! I'm doing laundry and will tell all about it later! Thanks for your prayers of protection! Pray for Jack and Tammy today - driving in the big city is hard on us small town girls....

Keep Praying

I know some of you are praying for us as we travel and I appreciate it so much. We had a near miss on the way here and I know it was God protecting us.

We were in Shreveport and there was some rain. We saw there
was a wreck about 40 yards ahead. Jim put on the brakes and I looked down.(I have an irrational fear of sliding into the back of a car on a slick road.) We were on a bridge and the pick up behind us pulled onto the left shoulder to avoid hitting us.
Then the fun started. A panel truck (AAron Rents) hit the small car behind the truck and sent it spinning all the way to the right. Then the panel truck went left hitting the big pickup at about our left, rear quarter panel. We not only heard but felt the crash. The pickup ended up in front of us (on the left shoulder) and the panel truck was about even with us. The whole thing scared the stew out of me!

I know it was God protecting us. Thanks for praying for our save return to Abilene.

On the Road Again

The dogwoods are so beautiful here! Yes, we've made it all the way to Birmingham with life and limb intact. It wasn't as bad as it could have been. I truly recommend a DVD player for all long trips. I'm surprised at how much better the kids do while engaged with a movie. We watched 2 Scooby Doo movies, Cheaper By the Dozen, some more I think. Jim and I don't watch - we just listen. That Shaggy is, like, such goofball, dudes.

We started seeing the dogwoods in East Texas. I just love them. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't grow in Abilene. There aren't enough tall trees for them to be under. I saw one pink one (in Alabama, of course) but lots of white ones. When I was a little girl my grandmother, Mama Crawford, had a box with the legend of the dogwood on it. The box had a very strong smell. I always thought it was dogwood wood but it was cedar, of course. My grandparents were old and I don't remember much about them but I remember that box.

Legend of the Dogwood

An old and beautiful legend has it that, at the
time of the crucifixion, the dogwood was comparable in size to the oak tree and
other monarchs of the forest. Because of its firmness and strength it was
selected as the timber for the cross, but to be put to such a cruel use greatly
distressed the tree. Sensing this, the crucified Jesus in his gentle pity for
the sorrow and suffering of all said to it: "Because of your sorrow and pity for
My sufferings, never again will the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used as
a gibbet. Henceforth it will be slender, bent nd twisted and its blossoms will be in the form of a cross -- two long and two short petals. In the center of the outer edge of each petal there will be nail prints -- brown with rust and stained with red -- and in the center of the flower will be a crown of thorns, and all who see this will remember

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the ER

Kenny: I've thought of a way to get the bagel out without burning my fingers.
Mom: How's that?
Kenny: I use a knife to stick it down in the toaster to get the bagel out.
Mom: Why is that not a good idea?
Kenny thinks for a minute: Because it would get the knife superheated?
Mom: No, the knife is a conductor of electricity and you could be electrocuted.
Kenny: Oh...

Spring is Sprung

Yeah, Kenny is at school for the entire day!!! Abbie is happily watching one of her favorites shows (Charlie and Lola), Jim is at the office, and I'm sitting down to type. All is right with the Waldrop household.

Spring Break ended with rain. Three days of rain. Here is Abilene it doesn't rain very often and people are usually thankful for the rain. I grew up with plenty of rain - it doesn't fascinate me. I don't remember how many days it has been since it last rained. I don't know how many inches it rained. I don't know the water level at Lake Fort Phantom. I try to notice if my plants need water; in Bham we didn't water in March, ever.

It did put a kink in the Spring Break plans. After being home all day on Thursday, I decided the children needed to go to Mimi's and pick up pecans. Then they could sell the pecans and maybe pay for their way into the movie. They needed to get out and they needed a task. It rained.

Uncle Billy took them to see Hoodwinked on Saturday because they were bouncing off the walls!! They enjoyed the movie and they love hanging with Uncle Billy. On Sunday one of Kenny's friends, Miles, came over. It's interesting how Abbie plays with the big boys. She loves them the way she loves Kenny. She supposes that they will treat her like she's fun to be with. The boys usually look at me when she hugs them looking up into their eyes. They're never sure this is okay. I think it's sweet.

Movie Night

Time for the review:
Jim and I saw Failure to Launch last night and laughed out loud. Jim was afraid it would be a girly movie and was a little relutant to see it. It's not too girly!! It's so funny. Matthew McConaughey was sooo cute. That man's teeth are unnaturally white. I know that he paid someone alot of money for those WHITE teeth! There's funny guy friends, a funny roomate, and Terry Bradshaw is hysterical as Matthew's dad. In fact, the only nudity is Terry's butt. There was some cursing and the "Queen Mother of Dirty Words" is used one time. Good for the parents to go see.

Maybe I'm getting older but I love laughing out loud at the show!!! I screamed, I guffawed, I was probably annoying. I always want my money's worth.

Spring Break - Day 2

Bad News: Abbie woke up at 7:00 and was raring to go! Kenny was ready to leave at 8:45!

Good News: They both left with Mimi and Pop at 9:20 to spend the night at a hotel! They went to some park to see dinosaur tracks and then spent the night away! Mom and Dad went to the movie and out to eat (on a gift certificate) BY OURSELVES.

How Long!?

Spring Break Day 1:
Breakfast - French Toast Can't go wrong with French Toast, right? Abbie didn't want any - she's still full from last night. Uncle Billy took her to Cracker Barrell and then Kenny to Red Lobster. We all want an Uncle Billy!
Kenny gets a haircut - We have to wait 1 hour! Is Sports Clips really worth it? It only costs $7.oo. I was too cheap and tired to leave a tip.
Abbie gets new shoes - Sports Clips is next to Payless so we go in and get white dress shoes. It helps with the wait. $14.00
We go to the library - They get books and one DVD each. Thumbalina (Abbie's choice) has a scratch and won't play. Abbie reads her books before we get home.
We go to United - It's all I can do to keep them from running up and down the aisles. Abbie gets to ride in the cart.

One down - 6 more to go!

I'm Too Sexy For This Shirt

I rarely leave my clothes someplace besides my house. Last week, I misplaced a shirt. It's black, has a collar and is a little too big. I hadn't missed it until I got an email asking if it was mine. I knew that last week was crazy but I thought I had made it home with all my clothes on.

The big question: Why didn't Jim notice?

Mazel Tov!

I know that all my faithful readers are anxious to hear about the wedding I worked this weekend. It was lovely. All professionally done so it's much easier on me. These paid people come in with lots of help, a clear vision, and knowing that they are getting paid. Because there's money involved they're just more motivated and focused. (Sorry, all you moms of the bride.)

I saw no tattoos. Don't be too disappointed - maybe I just missed them. It is a little hard to believe in this day that a room full of 20 somethings is tattoo free.

The video was interesting. Almost every wedding we've had at Southern Hills has a video presentation with childhood pictures. This is the sweetest thing!!! I can't wait till I get to do this to Kenny and Abbie! At this wedding, there were 3 songs. One of the songs was "Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts. That's a powerful song. All about how all the broken hearts and losers dated led the singer to his love. Great. The funny thing was the pictures of the couple together. There were SEVERAL of them kissing. It got a little personal. I think the kicker was them in the tub together. Yes, she had a bathing suit and so did he (I suppose) and it was cute with lots of bubbles but it still felt a little TMI (too much information) for this writer. But hey, it's all good now, right?

Disclaimer: These are sweet people and I love her aunt. The MOB is very nice and gave me a big bonus. It was really lovely.

Sunday, March 05, 2006

Wow! I've been really busy this week! I worked Dittos for Kiddos twice, taught school on Tuesday and Thursday, and worked a wedding this weekend. Now I'm on to sewing a dress for Abbie. It's impossible to find great fabric in Abilene. It's going to be a combination Easter and Aunt Margaret's wedding dress. Yes, that's right Aunt Margaret Tresler is getting married on April Fool's Day! (I'm pretty sure it was just the 1st day the church was available.) We will be going and both kids have to look wonderful, of course. I'll let you know how it goes!

***************************************************************

I was working at Dittos and one of the other workers was telling of her direct sales job - Passion parties. Eeeekkkk! You figure it out. One the other workers then says "Well, now I feel close enough to ask you all..." Let me tell you, I was scared. I didn't know what was coming out of her mouth! "Do Church of Christ people have to keep their houses clean? Without any clutter? Like, is that in your Bible?" I was stunned but in a much better way than I expected.
I know what you're thinking - is this woman blonde? Yeah, she's blonde. It turned out the 2 COCers she knew were very clutter-free. All the COC in the room confessed to messy and cluttered houses.
Is there somewhere we can add that? We could probably stick it in Proverbs somewhere. Do we need more guilt in our lives?

*************************************************************

For those of you that don't attend (or were unable to attend) Southern Hills, try to listen to Phil's sermon online. Phil has been doing a series on sin and today was on fire! I love my church. I love the conviction of our elders to love all sinners. I love reaching out to all sinners. Listen online or download for your iPod.

Just Singing in the Van

Jim and I went to the Acappella concert last night at Southern Hills and it was great. Jim hadn't heard of them before so it was ALL new to him. One the guys now is from Bham, Alan Brantley, Gary Brantley's son. It's always nice to see folks from the old homeplace. They have such a unique sound - unlike anything on Christian radio. It leans toward the old Stamps-Baxter songs. They all follow a familar pattern but the men have tremendous voices and I was taken back to Camp Wyldewood. We loved Acappella's music back then and we memorized all the songs.

I have been thinking of our tradition of acappella music alot lately. There's a whole unity thing going on that is seeking to put us (COC) more in touch with our instrumental brethern (a word you never thought you'd see on this blog!) I'm a music fanatic. I can have a good day based on the last song I heard or I can struggle all day with a horrible song stuck in my head. I listen to the contempory Christian station here in Abilene and have fallen in love with so many of these songs. My kids sing along as much as I do. We worship together every day with "Cry Out To Jesus" or "Famous." Or whatever comes on the radio that Mommy belts out! I am convinced that it's just a matter of time before we have a guitar (much hipper than a piano) in our public services.

I know my kids will probably wonder what all the acapella stuff was about. They'll say they enjoy that sometimes. Me, too.

What Ya Wearing?

Yes, we've been watching the Olympics and loving most of it. I don't enjoy the ski jump - it's boring and the outfits are ugly. Now I love speed skating! They push each other and pass each other. It does remind me of those Church of Christ- Sunday nights at Skateland. (Did you have those in your town? All the denominations have one Sunday night to come and skate after church. Or maybe it was only 4 denominations because we went 1 time a month.) I remember the races and how cool those guys were. The outfits those speed skaters wear crack me up! My personal favorite is the Netherlands. They seem to have on full girdles with black stockings. It's too funny. The snowboarders are wearing large ski pants and jackets with stripes. Kenny said it looked like they had on their pajamas.
I could write alot about the skaters - pairs, men, ice dancing and women - and their costumes. But I decided it wouldn't be as fun without the pictures. Let's just say that somewhere, someone is trying to find some sequins and they are all gone!
Now about curling..... It's fun, too. I love the way they slide on the ice and yell at each other and the "stone." Kenny has taken to watching it in the morning before school and he yells at the stone, too. I have also noticed (apologizes to my male readers) that the curling men are usually attractive. The shirts, the pants, the concentration - it looks pretty good to me.
As you can tell, my enjoyment of an Olympic sport is based on the uniforms and how the athletes look in them.

I'm Still Thinking

Sorry to leave yall hanging out there but life is getting in the way. I've been busy and haven't had much to say. I know it's hard to believe.
Monday Abbie was sick(again) with what ma would call a "fever virus." We went into the doctor to hear that and make Mommy feel better.

Today I was able to attend ACU Lecureship. I attended a class on Philemon-one of 4 on chapter books in the Bible. That was one thing I learned. Mostly intended for preachers, of course, it was a little.....theologically wordy. Tammy and I went and got some out of it. One the most interesting things to me was the teacher is out of the ICOC. What used to be the Boston Movement. WOW! In Birmingham we heard alot about the Boston Movement probably because Bham is so close to Florida, where it began. I had an opportunity to speak with him after and I didn't get all the answers I wanted. He, Doug Jacoby, said they aren't as controlling as they used to be and no longer have a charismatic leader like before. They have become more atonomous.
It lead me to the questions - Who's my brother? Who will I fellowship? Who is in my circle of belief? So much talk around here is about unity. Today I was confronted with being unified with a man that may not be in my circle. Doug mentioned "core beliefs." Do we share "core beliefs?" I suppose so. Are our non-core beliefs too far apart to fellowship one another? They weren't a problem today.

Sounds Heavenly

I have never liked the song "Mansion Over the Hilltop." I know the Bible says that Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us but do we have to be so selfish? A mansion, a robe and a crown? A gold one that's silver lined? One of the reasons I love the song "There's a Stirring" is because we get to lay down our crowns at Jesus's feet. I have since found out that this is in Revelation. I rebelled for years against the idea that our reward was tied to our good works. Finally I gave up. In lieu of the whole gold and silver lined mansion, I'm trusting God for a hut on the beach. I always envision Gilligian's place with the hammock.
Last week our director was talking about her job in heaven. I'd never thought of my job. She is planning on nursing - yes, breastfeeding. I asked just to be sure. It can be a wonderful experience but I say more power to her. So maybe my job will be handing out HUGE beach towels, comfy chairs, ipods with the best beach music, I don't know. I figure there won't be a commute.

Mommy, Is It Summer Yet?

Only 10 more Saturdays until the pool opens!

2nd Grade Valentines

My sweet 8-year-old said that they had to write letters to someone in class today. Everyone drew names and he got Kaitlyn.
"I like Kaitlyn." he says.
"Oh, yeah," I say, "why's that?"
"She laughs at my jokes and she has a nice smile," he says.
"That's a good reason to like someone," I say.
"I didn't tell anyone that because they will laugh at me," he says.
"Thanks for telling me. That makes me feel special," I say.

******Happy Valentine's Day********

The Flying Tomato

We love the Olympics at our house!! I am frequently trying to find a TV program that the whole family can enjoy and the Winter Olympics usually works. Abbie is not that interested so I keep pointing out the girls ice skating and their sparkly costumes. Kenny wants to luge so badly. He thinks that's the coolest sport ever!
I love The Flying Tomato - Shaun White. This guy is so cute! He loves his family and they talk about his family at every turn. He said this morning that he cried when he won because of his family. I keep talking about how cute he is and finally I had to say out loud that he's a "cute kid." Yep, I'm old enough to be his mom. Sometimes it just confronts me that I'm really THAT OLD.

Blessed Be the Name

On the way to the hospital last Thursday ( yep a week ago) I was so scared for Abbie and thought I might lose her. I have seen enough brain trauma victims to be very scared at what I thought was a LONG seizure. I was in the back seat with her trying not to imagine life without her. The entire time I kept up a running dialogue. It made sense to talk to her - mostly just Mommy's here and Daddy's here and we're in our van - stuff like that. She didn't acknowlegde me the until hours later. It was too scary.

Now here's the faith story:
I played the Jack card and started singing church songs. The only one that came to mind was I'm in the Lord's Army. Abbie was singing it a couple of weeks ago and it was so cute. She couldn't get the words right and we were singing together and Kenny jumped in - great family moment. Well, she wasn't responding to the Lord's Army so I went to Blessed Be the Name. It was the only other song I could think of and both of the kids love it. We crank it on the radio and everybody sings. When your daughter is having a seizure and you're worried about future brain function, singing "You give and take away" is confronting. Would a brain damaged Abbie truly make me thankful to God? Would I choose to say "Blessed be the Name?" Yeah, it went though my mind but I had the dismiss it or go crazy. I figured that the song might reach Abbie right then and I would deal with my own faith crisis later. I hope and pray to be thankful or accepting of the "taking away" but I'm very scared of it.

Blessed be Your name in the land that is plentiful Where Your streams of
abundance flow Blessed be Your name And blessed be Your name when I'm found in
the desert place Though I walk through the wilderness Blessed be your name Every
blessing You pour out I'll turn back to praise And when the darkness closes in
Lord Still I will say Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name Blessed be Your
name when the sun's shining down on me When the world's all as it should be
Blessed be Your name And blessed be Your name on the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering Blessed be Your name You give and take away
You give and take away My heart will choose to say Lord, blessed be Your name

Big Brother is Watching You

I read an interesting article in the January issue of Texas Monthly about our voting habits. It was generally believed that we vote for a canidate based on political or religious convictions. Maybe you vote Republican because you are against abortion or you vote Democrat because you are for gay marriage. Now the politicians are using another marketing tool - stuff you like. The title of the article tells us that what the Whole Foods shoppers are usually Dems and the Cabela's customers are Republicans.

Matching consumer preferences with voting profiles yields all sorts of interesting information. Republicans buy domestic SUVs and minivans; Democrats buy foreign ones. Rs drive Audis and GMCs and watch Fox News, and Ds drive Subarus and Volvos and watch CBS and CNN. The History and Learning Channels skew heavily R, while the Food Network is overwhelmingly D. Republicans drink dark alcoholic beverages, such as scotch and bourbon and red wine; Democrats drink white ones like gin and vodka and they prefer white wine. Dr Pepper is a Republican drink, Fantas Democratic. Camping equipment and hiking gear-which Dowd[Bush's chief strategist Matthew Dowd] points out are "noninvasive" outdoor products-tilt Democrat. Some of the data is wonderfully unpredictable, The TV show Will & Grace, for example, which centers on the lives of a gay man and a straight woman, leans heavily Republican. It's the Republican women who are watching it.

I drive a Honda minivan and Jim drives a Ford truck. I LOVE the Food Network (the kids can watch it with us) and Jim watches the History Channel whenever he can. I drink Lime Diet Cokes and Diet Dr Peppers and Jim has Lime Cokes. I watch MSNBC when I need a news fix and Jim likes Fox. I personally believe that anyone who has to say they are "fair and balanced," isn't. I have started watching Will & Grace on Lifetime at 10:00 since Jim's at work. We subscribe to Texas Monthly, too. What does that tell ya?

I've Been Tagged - Yeah!

I told Sarah I was like a little kid jumping up and down saying "Pick me, pick, me!" And she had! I know it's a little lame to be excited to be tagged - it must be left over insecurities.

Four Jobs I've Had:
Camp counselor at Camp Wyldewood in Searcy, Ark - after graduation I spent 3 summers in the heat!
Speech Therapist in Jasper, Ala
State of Alabama - during college I worked for the Employment Service
salesman and Manager of Crazy Bill's Fireworks stands - My family still does this and Jim has been selling ever since getting in the family.

Four Movies I Could Watch Over and Over:

Matrix - ok, not a chick flick. I love the futuristic stuff and when they blow up the inside of that office building.

Four Books I Could Read Over and Over:
The Bible - there's always something new
the Harry Potter series - love them all. I've read all of them 2 or 4 times. It's the story, it's the transporting to another place, it's the way they care for one another.
the Outlandler series - Diana Gabaldon I long to be in the middle of this tale. It involves time travel (I'm a geek,) a timeless love story, and cool contrasting to our time. I'm reading it the 2nd time through right now - I'm in book 4, Drums of Autumn - so I can enjoy the new one, A Breath on Snow and Ashes
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood - I'm seeing a pattern to my choices. I like the movie, too.

Four Places I've Lived:
Bay City,Michigan - I never met Madonna

Anthony
I thought about this alot and I would love to see your (both of your) answers!

Now, What Do I Push?

I'm still working on this computer thing. I haven't even tried to post any pictures yet but I'm working up to it. Last night I had a wonderful experience - I explained podcast to Jim! We aren't Ipod people (although I would love one) and I had to tell him how they work. I have a very limited understanding but I've got the basic premise.
So, bare with me as I learn how to do everything from change the date on the computer to getting pictures off the Web.

Wecome to 1985

Last night Steve Martin and Prince were both on http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live// I had to stay up to watch it! I felt like I was back in the 80's and I remember that time well! Prince was great - just like he always was. His second song was crazy - just like he always was. Steve Martin was a terrific, too. He can do much with so little dialogue, facial expression, whatever. Even I can tell he's a great actor. Who would have thought that "wild and crazy guy" would grow up like he did?

Just the Facts, M'am

Yesterday after picking Abbie up at school, Jim and I could tell she had a fever. We didn't take a temp just gave her some Tyneol and she wanted to go bed. I fell asleep on the couch and Jim was getting dressed. About 15 min. later, I heard some loud moaning and groaning and went to check on her. She had thrown up in the bed and just didn't seem right. I took her to the bathroom and she wasn't looking good. She was very stiff to take off her shirt and her eyes were glazed and unfocused. I knew then that she was having a seizure. I called for Jim - he said take her to the hospital (rather than call 911) and away we went. On the way, she continued to be non-responsive and very stiff. Her arms and legs were drawn in. She did lay her head on me but I wasn't able to tell if it was intentional. The trip took about 10 min.
We saw the helicopter landing when we arrived and I feel so blessed that we were able to go right in. The triage nurse acted like this was a paper cut and, oddly, I felt better. Tests had to be done to determine why her fever would go up so quickly. She reponded to the blood draw and seemed freaked by the CT scan. She remained non-responsive during the x-ray, too. Then we had to make her void (tinkle) and gave her about 10 oz of fluids. Abbie actually started to say momma then. I began to think there wasn't any brain trauma. They wouldn't let us leave without the urine sample and were about to put in an IV. She threw up on both of us and then fell asleep in Mimi's arms. After a LONG time, the IV was going in and we didn't want it! Mimi and I tried one more time to have Abbie tinkle. We put her on the potty (with a hat) and ran the water. It worked!! It took at least another hour but we had some discharge orders!!
Jim had given up and gone to work at about 5:30 and the nurse had chased everyone else out of the room at about the same time. We left at 8:15 (6 hours) and made it home before Kenny got home from tae kwondo.

Keep coming back for more of the exciting - Sick House!

The Sick House

This will be short! I have the flu - found out at 12:30. Abbie had a feveral siezure at 1:45. We went to the ER at Hendrix and stayed until 8:15. She has the flu, an ear infection, and a bladder infection. She's getting meds and I'm trying to stay awake. Mimi is staying the night so maybe I can sleep through the next throw-up and bed change.

Kenny's coughing - I'm thinking tomorrow might be his day! Yeah!

Jim is good - so far.

Thanks for everyone's prayers - I'll post soon about the funny side of the entire experience.

Movie Review

The entire family went to see Nanny McPhee on Saturday and we loved it! This is a new fairy tale that I will enjoy seeing again on DVD. I recommend it to everyone. My kids enjoyed it and I really liked it, too. I laughed and cried (which Kenny mentions to anyone when discussing the movie.)

Kenny's favorite part: The tea party when the 7 children attempt to drive away the new stepmother. It was full of gross stuff.

Abbie's favorite part: At the wedding (it IS a fairy tale, after all) when the bride gets her dress and veil. It is very beautiful and I saw no tattoos.

Denise's favorite part: Nanny McPhee gives the children what they ask for - no matter the consequences. Oh, that we all could.

Jim's favorite part: He said "the end" but I'm sure there was something in there he enjoyed?

Name Change?

Kenny is fascinated with Chinese culture. I don't know why - maybe God's preparing us for something in his future? For those of you don't know, Sunday is Chinese New Year and Kenny's class just completed a unit on Chinese culture. They had eggrolls and fortune cookies for snack today and watched Mulan. (I'm sure there was some math in there)

Funny thing is they talked about the Chinese zodiac and Kenny brought home a zodiac paper. Not the usual one at every Chinese restaurant but a little different. I am a Tiger, of course. Today's paper said that "other people respect Tiger people for their deep thoughts and courageous actions." Perhaps I should change the blog name?

Your Favorites...

Mike Cope 's blog today is about listing your favorite 3 worship songs. I'm a music addict and can recall lyrics from the 70's with ease. I've been reminded of some of my favorites while reading the comments section. I've also been amazed at some of the choices but I guess that's why some people complain about the song selections for Sundays. I ONLY complain when we sing Blue Skies and Rainbows.

Now it's your turn - What 3 worship songs would you choose for Sunday morning? Feel free to list again if you already posted on Mike's blog.

I Saw...

I saw a sign today that said they "Change your windshield wiper for free." It's hasn't rained here in at least a month.

I saw the Biblical size of Welch's grape juice (purple) in a refrigerator next to a bottle of Pinot Grigio. Does the Fruit of the Vine have to be red (purple)? I'm just asking.

I love irony.

Here's a Sweet One

Yesterday's wedding:
Father of the Bride almost caused a meltdown in the bride's room before the wedding! Mother of the Bride was VERY upset! She questioned the FOB until he confessed what he had said to the bride. He told her "I'm sure I won't see anything that beautiful this side of the pearly gates."

It was beautiful and I only saw one tattoo.

The Tattoo Wedding

This one was a few months back...
It seemed that everyone in the wedding had a tattoo. One of the bridesmaids had a large butterfly on her upper back that was visible (of course) in her bridesmaid dress. The bride's tattoo was on her ankle and I wasn't close enough to see her design. This is a problem with old age - you can't see the tattoos.
Then there was the music. The groom and minister walked in to "The Hammer of Krum." I had no idea what this was either. It turns out that this music is from "Conan, The Barbarian." It did sound like some barbarian music lots of banging timpani. The recessional is usually when the bridal couple REALLY express themselves so it's usually quirky or funny. I didn't know this song, something by the Pretenders, but on the my 2nd hearing I perked up. Did he just sing "hell?" I think he did sing "hell." He sang "hell." So do I make these people pull the song at the rehearsal? Do we have a curse word in our building, over the sound system? How bad does the cuss word have to be before we pull the song? One f-word, two?
I let it pass. I heard no more cursing on the song. I have since mentioned to the brides that the music should be without swearing.

Old Candy - New Fun

"These are exploding in my mouth!" "They are noisy in my mouth!" "Let's make these at home - here's a list of ingredients." "I'm getting Pop Rocks whenever I can find them!" Abbie just giggles.... Today my children discovered Pop Rocks.

Wednesday, January 11, 2006

Yeah, we played the Jack card and asked for prayer for him. For all you out-of-towners, Jack's MRI was great! His tumors continue to shrink.
I know lots of you have friends that need prayers and want to play the card for them. Lets! Be sure to ask for prayers for your family and friends whenever you need to. God isn't like "Bruce Almighty" that had to sit at his computer all day to get his prayer requests on email. Our God is so big and He has lots of memory!

Prayers for Jack

jackmarcelain.blogspot.com
On a more serous note: pray for Jack today. He will receive a MRI this afternoon to determine his tumors size. This will impact his continued treatment. This family is dear friends with ours and we are all praying, too.

Pew Notes

I hate it when someone else sits in MY pew! This can set me back 2 or 3 songs, easy. Yesterday I had to sit in the middle. This isn't a problem for me except I have to leave to take Abbie to Kid's Church and usually Kenny needs water or needs to go out to blow his nose. I know this is the wrong attitude to take. So is this a rant or a confession? I'm not sure. We attend a large church with new people coming in all the time and they need somewhere to sit, too. When we first started we took one of the elders seats - they were gracious and never complained. It was my goal (unspoken until now) to get there before them every Sunday. But I LOVE to sit in the front so we moved up. Whose pew did we take? I have my thoughts and I try to beat them every Sunday now. God love 'em.

Notes from the Drive-In, Part II

The movie was Cheaper By the Dozen 2 and I must say it appeals to all members of the family:
Kenny's favorite part: 7th grader says he can follow a scat trail, 2nd graders (twins) say what's a scat trail? 7th grader says animal poop 2nd graders say OOOO and Cool!

Abbie's favorite part: 8th grade tomboy gets ready for her first date. She puts on make up and a skirt. This is told by Abbie with a head tilt and upward glance, very cutesy.

Denise's favorite part: Steve Martin, as the dad, tries to knee board. This is some type of water skiing. Gets dragged and slowly walks upstairs where he collapses on the bed. In a wet suit, totally spread eagled, completely wiped out! Bonnie Hunt, as the mom, walks in from the bathroom, "Oh, ok, I'll just put on some perfume."

Notes From the Drive-In

On Monday we went to the Town and Country Drive-In and these are some of the lessons learned:
1. Don't take fast food to the drive-in. It is hard to eat in the dark. Especially if you are 3.
2. Locate the bathrooms first. They are the same bathrooms from 1959.
3. Kids spill - take a roll of paper towels.
4. The smell of all food is over powering in an enclosed van. What smells good to one child will not to another.
5. There's no rewind - it's like a real movie.
6. The windows fog up when kids lean on the dashboard. Wiping them only makes a bigger mess.
7. You can throw up right outside the van - you don't HAVE to find the bathroom.

Welcome 2006!

Well, it finally got here. 2006. Did you think we would all be like George Jetson? I did. When I was a kid, 2006 meant push button everything and a robot maid. I remember Jane, his wife, having problems with her fingers getting all tangled from too many buttons. A flying car with autopilot would be great on trips to Birmingham, too. I can see Astro's dog walk as a treadmill - though in 2006 PEOPLE use a treadmill and DOGS get a dog park!

----------------------------

On another note - my jobs. Some of you know I have numerous part-time jobs. My full-time job is Wife and Mother. (Do men say Husband and Father first?) I also teach 2 year olds at a Day School at Highland CoC. That is Tuesday and Thursday and I would be unable to add any other days, thank you. These are all babies that have just turned 2 and need diaper changes, encouragement to eat whatever mom sent, and to be patted to sleep. (Abbie gets to go for free.) I also am the only rep for Kelly's Kids in Abilene. The extra money is nice and Abbie's clothes are bought at a discount. One more.... I work for our church, Southern Hills, as a Wedding Coordinator or Facilities Manager for Weddings or Office liaison for Weddings. I can't settle on a job title. I make sure the building is set up the way they want it for their wedding and that it is set up correctly for the next worship service. I am present at all weddings and always help out with lots of stuff. I'm also supposed to represent Southern Hills in a good light especially to non-members. Lots of funny stuff happens at weddings - stay tuned.
